Foi ondeiniciou sua carreira como radialista, de 1988 a 2000 trabalhou naRádio Centro-Oeste de Pinhalzinho (SC). Neste período tambémtrabalhou como apresentador de programa de televisão no SBT deChapecó, e em 1997 entrou na política ao ser vice-prefeito dePinhalzinho. Desde então, João Rodrigues não parou. Nas eleições de2000, foi eleito prefeito de Pinhalzinho com 4.045 votos (53% dosvotos válidos). Em reconhecimento à sua gestão na prefeitura,recebeu o Prêmio Mário Covas do Sebrae Nacional, como destaque nacategoria “Prefeito empreendedor”.Em 2002, João Rodrigues foi eleito o terceiro deputado estadualmais votado, com 48.549 votos. Em 2004, foi eleito prefeito deChapecó, com 43.829 votos (43,8% dos votos válidos). Foi reeleitoem 2008, com 59.386 votos (59% dos votos válidos). Em 2011 iniciouo seu sexto mandato eletivo após uma votação recorde para deputadofederal. Rodrigues foi o quarto deputado mais votado em SantaCatarina, com 134.558 votos. Em 2014, foi o segundo deputadofederal mais votado em Santa Catarina com 221.409 e o segundo maisvotado do PSD no Brasil.Em 2011, João Rodrigues aceitou convite do governador RaimundoColombo e assumiu como secretário de Estado da Agricultura e daPesca.
